In the midst of a huge winter storm, Billy Baumanmn, illustrator Anne Benjamin, and us, all set out to interpret Giant Steps. The big question…how would these chord progressions and rhythms influence such different creative processes? In January of 2011, we dove in—to find out. The concept was to make a multifaceted print, one that stands on it’s own and could be folded and assembled into an artist book. We improvised on the entire content, building the layers step by step as a group. Much like a quartet, we went through rehearsal sessions, reassembled parts, and shaped the content into a whole. The book, which we called Chart Progression, follows a loose narrative of forms, lines and shapes, while the poster uses that structure as back bone for an illustration of John Coltrane. The project was both challenging and rewarding. The content is playful and rhythmic and Anne’s letterpress cover really seals the deal.
