The reunion bug has really caught on, hasn’t it. Honestly, I’ve been disappointed with the few of these shows that I’ve seen. Take music that gained much of it’s power through shear obscurity and isolationism, and stick it in front of a crowd of middle-aged nostagists in a fancy club and you’re just bound to get a few duds. The string of Codeine reunion shows feels different though. Coinciding with the recent reissue of their entire catalog by the amazing Chicago-based label, Numero Group. Codeine’s fragile and flooring melodic power dirges of heartbreak and loneliness still sound as powerful as they did when my teenage ears first encountered them. And now, thanks to the generosity of local photo-realist screen print wizard, Dan MacAdam, we add Codeine to our client list. Originally initiated by Dan as a poster for his Crosshair studio, he chose to extend the opportunity in the form of a Sonnenzimmer/Crosshair collaboration. We’ve been long time fans of Dan’s work, especially his insanely precise screen printing separations for his architectural and nature photography. This project gave us the opportunity to dig into those very separations and add our own two cents! Interjecting a complimentary blocky type treatment, with clipped and stitched photographs of our own, the finished piece is an ode to Codeine’s powerful music and the trust of valued teamwork.
