We were first introduced to Winnipeg by one of our favorite bands, the Weakerthans. Then we got introduced to it again because of it’s print residencies. Plastic Paper is an animation festival also held in Winnipeg! Organized by renaissance-indie production force, Big Smash Productions, we were excited about this poster job. This is the power of alternative tourism (take note city departments)! We first developed a postcard, knowing we would have to translate it to ads, offset and screen print. Our biggest struggle was to battle the notion of the words: Plastic and Paper. They each formally pull from two different graphic libraries. The Akzidenz Grotesk font is a humble nod to Joseph Müller-Brockman’s Film poster. Motion however was implied by forms and images, not type.
