In Shape Song we make the claim that music and graphics derive from the same source—surfaces. All graphics are bound to a surface whether it’s paper, a screen, or even projected light. Sound, though often associated with invisible waves flying through the air, is bound to surfaces too. Sound originates from the vibrations of surfaces—think of a large gong or vocal cords. If music can be described as the organization of sounds, does it follow that music is also the organization of surfaces? Over the course of this essay, we explore the metaphor to several logical and abstract conclusions. The text was originally published as in an artist book released in conjunction with our 2018 exhibition Shape Song at Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN.
