Shared Sides

Our work evolves slowly, but when we do introduce a new methodology into our practice, it tends to stick. We’ve hinted at furniture in past works, but Shared Sides is our first proper venture into the time-tested medium. With all its history, collective form-finding, functionality, and expressions, we’re excited to see how this foray will influence and impact our work. It feels new, but it’s so old. Furniture is so closely linked to the human experience. It’s exciting to inhabit the medium with a beginner’s naivety. We don’t know what we don’t know, and that’s a powerful place to be.

In Shared Sides, we turn to physical structure as a storytelling device. Image planes meet, and cross, and poetry bisects creating a deconstructed bookform that doubles as a usable chair. These disparate elements stage a meditation on perception: how visual overtones shimmer between the outer world and the private interior of the mind.
 
The work is tethered to this central tension—what is happening within me, and what is unfolding out here. This invites the viewer to sit inside the inquiry, to inhabit the very space of its making. A place of respite or a confrontation? Perhaps both. 

By drawing the thought process onto axial planes and loading imagery and words into the body of this image furniture, we ask: how do the two sides of a thought feel when they have never been witnessed beyond oneself? Thoughts do have two sides—their internal seed and their external sprout. They are different, but they touch. This work actively positions the viewer’s mind as the surface in between.
