Image as Object, Object as Image: Workshop
Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis, MN, January, 2013
Working with a undergraduate graphic design students, in connection with our exhibition Image as Object, Object as Image, workshop participants were challenged to produce a screen printed meta-catalog for the show by building their own improvisational “reproductions” of the artworks in the exhibit in a publication. Three student groups were provided with pre-printed paper, peppered with blank rectangles representing each of the artworks in the exhibit. From there, they were tasked with “cataloging” the exhibit in the most abstract sense of the word, as well as developing a type treatment for the publication. The resulting poster/booklets mix improvisation, design thinking, physical dexterity, and collaboration meant to challenge any notion of hierarchy between artist and designer, designer and printer, and observer and the observed.
